How to create content when you don’t have time

Wouldn’t it be nice to have a blog that went out on time each week?

Sometimes blogging and creating content for marketing can be a bit of a bore. A task that you do with gusto for about three weeks and then other, more urgent jobs take over.

Except blogging and content writing doesn’t need to feel like this. It shouldn’t be a chore to show your clients what you’re made of and so very often it does.

Which is a shame because I’m sure you’re actually really passionate about talking about your business and what you do.

The problem is that we’re made to feel like there is simply too much to do and that we don’t have the time in which to do it.

Here are some ways in which you can create content when you’re short on time.

1. Get organised

You want to put out certain things on certain dates? Get yourself organised. Get yourself a content planner or calendar and break your year, quarter, month and week down into regular tasks. Then schedule in some time to do the work.

2. Create a habit

Getting into the habit of writing content will make it seem like less of a chore. It will also make your copy more consistent and increase the chances of your delivering your work at the same time each week.

The best way to create a habit is to tag it onto something else. If go for a run on a particular day, then tell yourself that following your run you are going to write your blog post for that week.

Before you know it, you’ll be in a routine and creating content will be habit.

3. Hit the refresh button

If you already have a stack of content on your site then you might want to give some of it a refresh. Updating existing content takes less time. Finding out which are your most popular posts and refreshing them is a quick way to generate content.

4. Get someone else to do it

If you really don’t have time to keep up with your content marketing then hiring someone to do it for you makes sense.

Figure out how much time you currently spend on creating content. Then how often you would like that content to be published, not how often you manage to publish it right now. Next work out your hourly rate. This should give you an idea of how much value for money you get by hiring a content writer to do it for you.

5. Don’t do it all

You cannot do content marketing well if you are trying to be all things to all people. If you are hitting up four or five social media platforms, creating blog posts, newsletters, and podcasts.

Do not try do it all.

Do what converts for your business. Usually this is the one platform or type of content that you actually find time to do. If you’re unsure, have a look at your analytics. The answer is always in the analytics.

Or you could just not do it AT ALL. I can’t promise that’s good advice for your business. But if you’re not being strategic about the content that you’re putting out there then maybe you might as well not putting any out at all until you can be.
